Queen Latifah, was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970 in Newark. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her performance skills, political stance and a talent for rhyme. A Muslim cousin has given Latifah the name "delicate, sensitive" when she was eight years old. Latifah sang with the choir of the Shiloh Baptist church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She had her first public performance singing "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a musical production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mom was a major influencer and she kept in touch with the students and the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey who is also known as D.J., was invited to attend the event. Mark the 45 King invited her to appear at the school dance.
