
Ormond was the daughter of Josephine, a lab technician and John Ormond (a stockbroker) located in Epsom, Surrey. Ormond is the fifth of five children born to her parents. She was educated in private schools, at first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early lead performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady began to draw attention. After one year in art school, she was transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated in the year 1988. Ormond first made an appearance on British television in the 1989 drama Traffik that focused on the illegal heroin trade that flows from the far East into the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin addict daughter of the main character who was a Home Office minister who was engaged in fighting the importation of heroin. The role was a hit and received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
